The Spier Wine Farm has been growing grapes and making wine since the early 1700s. The year 1692 saw Governor Simon van der Stel inscribe his name on the first title deed for the farm, making it one of the first farms to be established in Stellenbosch. Van der Stel awarded ownership to a German soldier, Arnoud Janz, which marked the beginning of a story that has unfolded for over 300 years. From the dark days of slavery to the recognition of award-winning sustainability measures and wines, the farmstead has inscribed itself in Stellenbosch’s fascinating history. Meticulous renovation has restored the gracious Cape Dutch buildings to their former glory, and today the farmstead is considered a leading destination wine estate.
The wines created at the Spier Wine Farm are made with precision, without causing any disturbance to the environment. Cellar Master Frances Smit joined the winery in 1996 and he is one of the major reasons for the transformation of this small Stellebosch unit into an award-winning winery today.
One of the most popular series in the Spier Wine Farm is the Signature Collection. The wines in this range are made from the choicest of grapes, processed to retain their original character in the wines. The cellars of this winery are designed to ferment the grapes with as little external interference as possible. Fully open fermenters, barrels made from French Oak, and the usage of ceramic eggs make the wine-making process as natural and organic as possible.
