Tasca d'Almerita - Regaleali Sicilia Nero d'Avola 2021
In 1830 the Tasca brothers purchased Tenuta Regaleali, a green oasis in the center of Sicily in the county of Sclafani. Since then, each generation of the Tasca dâAlmerita family has cared for this land, sharing its bounty with passion.
After World War II, The Tasca dâAlmerita family started making wines at Tenuta Regaleali: a fresh, light white; a medium-bodied red; and a delicious rosĂ©âthe three Regaleali Classics on which the winery built its reputation. The path here hasnât been linear: In 1959 Count Giuseppe Tasca dâAlmerita planted Perricone and Nero dâAvola vines of the alberello style on the San Lucio hill. With this plot, he created the foundation for the first wine from a single vineyard in Sicily: the Riserva del Conte (later called Rosso del Conte), which was first sold to the public as a 1970 vintage. A red of particular longevity, it is still an icon of the estate today. In the early 1980s, Nozze dâOro took center stage: a white wine from native grapes (Inzolia and âSauvignon Tascaâ) capable of long bottle aging. Towards the end of the same decade, Giuseppeâs son, Lucio Tasca dâAlmerita, introduced the most well-known international grape varieties to Sicily in order to compete with the worldâs greatest wineries. Wines made from these grapes introduced the winery to international audiences.
After this success, the Tasca dâAlmerita family looked back tolocal varieties: Nero dâAvola, Catarratto, Perricone (typical of the area), Nerello Mascalese, and Grillo. Today there are 25 grape varieties in production at Tenuta Regaleali.
The Regaleali estate spans nearly 600 hectares, with 12 types of soils and six hills between 450 and 850 of altitude. These vineyards are cultivated using a minimal intervention approach. The estate prioritizes manual labour over chemical inputs, embrace organic methods to manage pests, and embrace pro-active cultivation technique to preserve the health of the soil.
